Carloway Angling Club is a community owned fishery on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, it is managed by Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh (Carloway Estate Trust). The Club were delighted to receive support from Wild Fisheries Fund in 2022 to carry out monitoring work on previous river improvements and to undertake further enhancement of the spawning beds in a stream in the upper part of the system. Electrofishing will take place in summer 2024 and will be carried out carried out in the same locations as the last survey which was carried out in 2021.
With much of the river, lochs and tributaries dominated by peaty bottoms, improving the habitat for successful spawning has been a priority for the Trust for the last 3 years with the first improvement works successfully completed in 2022. With support from the Fund they will be able to continue this work in 2024, with the addition of thirty tonnes of stone to the bed of a stream feeding one of the two main salmon lochs in the system.
Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh look forward to continuing to develop or relationship with the salmon industry and hope to carry out further improvements to our fishery in Carloway in the future.
